Taunton Area Guide

Taunton is the County Town of Somerset and dates back to Saxon times. The name was given to the town due its proximity to the River Tone and was a Saxon development of huge importance.

The centre of the town boasts a large variety of historic buildings that offer significant architectural importance. These date back to Tudor times and even the medieval period. The Castle Hotel is at the heart of the town centre with the former 13th Century Castle now being internationally recognised.

In recent years Taunton has risen in popularity as a place to live due to it’s unrivalled location within Somerset. It is more commonly known as ‘the gateway to the south west’ with fantastic road and motorway links to both Devon and Cornwall. Bristol is also located close by and the A303 provides a direct road link towards London and many towns across the south coast of England.

As the County Town of Somerset, Taunton also has an amazing shopping centre with an array of popular high street retail chains and a number of bars, restaurants and eateries. The mainline railway station provides a direct link to London Paddington which can be achieved in under 2 hours. Schools in the area are also very popular with both primary and secondary schools being highly sought after. Many other activities can be enjoyed with the local library, multiplex cinema, ten pin bowling alley and golf courses all within the towns boundaries. You can even enjoy walks across Quantock Hills and Blackdown Hills which have both been designated as areas of outstanding natural beauty.
